WHAT TO EXPECT
The first visit is mostly about gathering information, getting to know the patient and educating them on their options.
“My approach is to gather the information that will help me diagnose any problems such as cavities or gum disease and educate the patient,” says Dr. Youmans. “From there I can develop several treatment plans and options. After this process the patient can choose the treatment that will best suit his or her needs and wants. For me, it’s not what I can I do to you, it’s how can I help you.”
Upon your first visit, Dr. Youmans will conduct an introductory exam, go over your medical history and take digital x-rays. We pride ourselves on using state-of-the-art equipment and only use digital x-rays. Our digital machine takes pictures much faster, provides better resolution and best of all, uses about 80 percent less radiation than traditional x-rays. We might take up to 18 x-rays to get a complete overview of the patient’s health, and this equals about the same radiation you might get from spending a day at the beach — probably less.
We will go over the x-ray results with you and discuss any potential problem areas. The patient will typically have their teeth cleaned on the first visit. We will bring the patient back for more complex procedures.
We want to make going to the dentist as comfortable as possible, and honesty is a large part of feeling at ease. “The patients may not always like what I have to tell them, but it will always be the truth and I always have the patient’s best interests in mind,” Dr. Youmans says.
