DENTAL CLEANING (PROPHY)

A dental prophylaxis or Prophy is a procedure that removes the plaque, light stain and light (tarter) from the teeth in a healthy mouth. During the prophy the registered hygienist will use various instruments to remove the plaque, stain and tarter thus removing bacteria that can lead to gingivitis and periodontal disease. If it has been several years since your cleaning or you build up plaque, stain and tarter at a fast rate you may need a full mouth debridement, which is a more involved and time consuming cleaning.

DEEP CLEANING (ROOT PLANING)

If root planing is needed, the bacteria that live on your teeth and gums have infected the gums, bones and roots below the gum line. The result of periodontal disease can be receding gums, bleeding gums, bone loss, halitosis, loose teeth, tooth movement and tooth loss. Root planing is a nonsurgical procedure performed by a registered hygienist that removes the infected and inflamed tissue surrounding the roots (cementum) of the teeth. Due to the depth below the gum line that the cleaning occurs at, root planing is more time consuming and usually requires anesthetic. Typically after root planing patients will have more frequent cleanings know as periodontal maintenance. In some cases root planing is not enough to control periodontal disease and periodontal surgery may be needed.
