ROOT CANAL

Although teeth may seem to be inanimate objects they are in fact are alive. The inside layer, also known as the pulp, of a tooth contains nerves, and blood vessels. On occasion the pulp will become inflamed or infected to the point the nerve and blood vessels necros or die. This process can be painful and an abscess may form but many times there is no indication of the necrosis of the pulp. Often times a root canal is needed due to a large cavity infecting the pulp but, fractures in the tooth, and injuries to the tooth can lead to pulp death. The signs and symptoms that a root canal are needed are pain to biting, pain with hot or cold food and drinks, a metallic taste, malodor, swelling, draining puss, a tooth that changes color, a tooth that becomes lose, spontaneous tooth pain and a visible infection on an x-ray. At this point there are 2 option for the infected tooth, extract the tooth or have a root canal. A root canal removes the dead tissue of the pulp and disinfects the inside of the tooth but leaves the root in place. You get to keep the tooth. Once the root canal is completed a crown is placed on the tooth to restore the strength and function of the tooth.
